Emergency Dental Service

A dental emergency generally involves pain and needs to be treated urgently and with care. They can happen in many ways and often occur when least expected. Our professional experienced staff are perfectly equipped to deliver emergency dental service quickly to minimise the unpleasant experience. Emergency Dentist Bendigo is your go-to option for any dental emergency.

Abscessed Tooth

If you have difficulty chewing, a sharp toothache, or an abnormal sensitivity to heat, cold, and pressure, chances are you have an abscess. This is a bacterial infection at the tip of the root of a tooth or in the gums next to the root.

Unchecked, this infection can spread through your bloodstream, compromising your immune system and making you susceptible to a host of other infections, including colds and flu. As well as causing your lymph nodes to become uncomfortably swollen, it can give you bad breath and leave a bad taste in your mouth. It can even cause a hip or knee replacement to fail so the surgery has to be repeated.

A course of antibiotics on its own is not enough to successfully treat an abscess. To guarantee it won't recur, the cavity must be drained and cleaned thoroughly. A root canal may be required.

Broken Dentures

If you own a set of dentures, rest assured they are going to break. It’s inevitable. Over time, with wear and tear, the acrylic plastic weakens, cracks, and eventually fractures.

The good news is that repairing them is quick, inexpensive, and easy. It is, however, important you get them attended to promptly. Don’t try to fix them yourself, except temporarily, so that they last long enough for you to get them seen to by our professionals.

Chipped Tooth

This is where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A chipped tooth that could be quickly and easily smoothed today becomes an unsightly discolouration requiring drilling and filling tomorrow. If the cracks in the enamel go deep enough, you might even wind up losing the tooth altogether.

Whether the chip is large or small, save yourself time and money by getting Emergency Dentist Bendigo to attend to it immediately.

Infection & Swelling

The symptoms of infection are:

  • A toothache that gets worse when you’re lying down
  • Sensitivity to pressure
  • Swollen cheeks
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks
  • Tender or swollen lymph glands in the neck
  • Feverishness
  • An elevated body temperature
  • Bad breath
  • A bad taste in your mouth
  • Redness and swelling are sure signs of bacterial infection. If untreated, the site of the infection will turn into an abscess, with all the concomitant problems and challenges.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is a dental emergency. The sooner you act, the better your chances of saving it, but only if you follow these instructions to the letter:

  • Retrieve the tooth: Don’t touch the root as you will infect it with the bacteria on your fingers. Only touch the bright white enamel crown of the tooth.
  • Clean the tooth: Gently rinse it with running water. Don’t use soap, don’t scrub it, and don’t dry it.
  • Re-implant the tooth: There are two ways of going about this -
  • 1. Holding it by the enamel with your fingers, gently push it back into the socket;
  • 2. Position the tooth over the socket, then slowly and carefully bite down on it. *Please note: If it’s a child’s tooth, don’t try to re-implant it as you may damage the adult tooth beneath.
  • Keep the tooth moist: The tooth must not be allowed to get dry. Do not use tap water as it will damage the root cells. Instead, after cleaning it, if you are unable to get it back in the socket, either keep it in your mouth (being careful not to swallow it!) or place it in a glass of milk.
  • Get to the nearest emergency dentist: You’ve done your part: now let our professionals take over.

Lost Crown or Veneer

Again, time is of the essence. Get the earliest appointment available. In the meantime, gently clean the crown or veneer with running water and try to reattach it with toothpaste or a small amount of dental fixative, the kind sold in supermarkets to keep dentures in place.

A missing crown or veneer is only an emergency if there is a significant amount of pain or damage involved; in which case you need to see Emergency Dentist Bendigo right away.

Lost Filling

While a lost filling isn't critical, it does require prompt attention. In the interim, while you're waiting for your appointment, avoid getting food and bacteria lodged in the space left by the filling by not chewing on that side of your mouth. Also, make a point of rinsing regularly with warm salt water, especially after meals.

Sports Injuries

Dental injuries are extremely common in sports, especially those of the contact variety, like rugby, hockey, boxing, and martial arts.

The current estimate is that as many as 5 million teeth are lost a year this way, which is why it is so important to always wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards not only protect your teeth, but they also help minimise the damage to your jaw, lips, and tongue.

What's important when you sustain this type of injury is to get it accurately assessed. Your teeth might look and feel okay but that doesn't mean there isn't significant underlying damage that will lead to all kinds of future complications.

With the aid of X-rays and a thorough examination, our experienced dentists will be able to tell you exactly how much damage you've sustained and what measures you need to take to reverse it.
